...On Fried Pies, and Other Points to Ponder

So I had to laugh at all the "fried pie" comments I got on my previous post...I wasn't thinking about that being such a "Southern thang"...but I guess it is!

My mom used to make fried pies occasionally, but I grew up with stories of her grandmother making them all the time...

You roll out some dough into a 6 - 8" circle, put some pie filling in the middle, fold the dough around it (into a half circle) and crimp the dough closed with a fork. Then you fry the pie in hot oil until it's golden brown...and maybe sprinkle it with some sugar if you wanna get all fancy.

Viola! A delectable handheld treat!

On a potentially-related "Southern" note, I used to get some real looks at the office when I was pregnant. Since I wasn't eating lunchmeat, every day of the world I ate a peanut butter and banana sandwich on whole wheat (with two glasses of milk).

I grew up eating that combination, but I don't think most folks this far north had ever heard of it. If you haven't tried it, the banana / peanut butter combo is outstanding!

The girls have suddenly decided they like having their teeth flossed. I used to do it (with a little flosser pick) on occasion, whenever I would see something I couldn't get with the toothbrush...but it never went very smoothly.

The last time I needed to use a flosser, I made a big deal of how good it feels to floss your teeth. I turned on some serious Vanna and sold that experience for all it was worth.

Over the last week, the girls can hardly wait to get their pajamas on..."Flosssers!" they cheer. (And I have to laugh just a bit!)

I was listening to the radio on the way home from the grocery store last night. I'm not often in the car for very long these days, so I don't hear much of what's on the radio, but I happened on a Pink song that I'd heard a time or two before.

I came home to look up the full lyrics, and -- while I really hate that there's a big expletive right in the middle of the title line / chorus -- I was still really struck by the message...

Pretty, pretty please
Don't you ever, ever feel
Like you're less than ... perfect

Love it.

Oh, fried pies...yum!! : ) Jeremy eats banana and pb sandwiches several times a week. The girls like them too.

That Pink song has been in my head for over a week now! There is a movie about cyberbullying coming on ABC Family tomorrow night and that song is on the commercial. Love the message!

Mmmmm... now I must go {buy} a fried pie. I've never made one. Our restaurant used to sell them and I was heartbroken when we stopped carrying them. And I always ate PB & banana or PB & honey growing up. :)

Fried pies sound super YUMMY!

Another great sandwich combo...peanut butter and dill pickle slices. (Don't knock it until you try it...LOL)

You should head on over and "link up"that Pink song with our "Songs that Make Us Sing Saturday!"...it's a great message!

Have a wonderful weekend!

In SA, we have peanut butter and jam (apricot usually).

D is from Zimbabwe and he had peanut butter with golden syrup.

PS I'm still waiting for a pic of you in your cute summer dresses :)

PS that pb and pickle combo is from Sue Grafton's Kinsey Mallone series - love that people actually eat that

I've never heard of fried pies but peanut butter and banana and I have a long history. I love it the same way you do only I put it in the George Forman grill until it is all warm and gooey!

My husband eats peanut butter, jelly, pickles, and hot sauce sandwiches. I so wish I were joking. It even grosses out my little ones!

I have always loved PB and honey! Still eat it at least once a week. :-)

I like the Pink song, too, except for the "F" word in there. I like the radio edited version better. Have you also heard the new Selena Gomez song? Its kinda teeny-bopper-ish but is called "Who Says?" great message about your self imagine/confidence.

Try as I might, I can't get myself to like peanut butter. I still a butter on bread sandwich kinda girl.

Oh, and by the way, do you buy your dough from the store or do you make it? Any brand recommendations?

So it's a fried turn over. Interesting. It's like funnel cake meets turn over. I think I need two! My grandmother was PA dutch so I had a lot of weird food growing up. No one has ever heard of spatelzes but I could eat myself sick on them! I'm also a big fan of fluffernutters!

I LOVE that song. I'm not a big fan of pop, is pink even pop? am I that old? But I really like that song. **Goes to itunes because she must have it now**

I've never ventured into flossing. I can hardly get DH to floss, and brushing has suddenly become a major issue so I'm not pushing my luck at the moment.

omg. i want a fried pie. :)

and i've been totally stressed about flossing lately. sometimes it is so hard to get the kids to BRUSH that i just worry that adding one more thing to the mix might just push them over the edge, lol.

Thanks for the fried pie info. I really did want to know. Sounds very tasty!

I know that Pink song! But I had to look up the lyrics to find out what the expletive is. I've never, ever hear the title or heard the word in the song. Perhaps I'm just not paying enough attention, or maybe our stations just play the clean version.

Do you listen the the Laurie Berkner Band (kids' music)? She has a song, I'm Not Perfect, that I love to sing with my kids. Although, I often get choked up when I sing the last part "But you're not perfect, and you know, I love you that way." It's so true though. And I want my kids to really believe it.

I'll confess to being one of "those" people who looked at you strangely with the PB and banana sandwiches, Friend - but don't forget you also always had fresh spring salads with not one but exactly two spritzes of vinaigrette dressing, and about a half a can of almonds every day and a case of water.

By the way, that Pink song has a non-expletive (and non-bleeped) version that simply says "like you're less than, less than perfect" so it doesn't just bleep out the word, it maintains a flawless flow. The video, in case you're so inclined to YouTube it, is rated R; though its message is incredibly powerful. (my guys are at an age that they like to YouTube their fave songs... so I had to ban this one)
