Ritualistic? Well, Maybe Just a Bit...

It’s no secret that I’m rather schedule-oriented.

The girls get up at a certain time, eat breakfast at a certain time, poop at a certain time, go down for a nap at a certain time…you get the picture. (And just kidding on the poop…but wouldn’t that be nice???)

There are also plenty of things I do each and every day, just the same…like invite the girls to eat in the exact same intonation, and pray the exact same prayer every night as I put them to bed (part of which I’ve been praying since we found out we were pregnant!).

Our breakfasts alternate between oatmeal and cream of wheat during the week, and on Sundays I make the girls French toast (following a Saturday night reading of Curious George and the Pancake Breakfast).

I don’t literally consider myself ritualistic, but I think there’s value in structure and knowing what to expect…and I figure, why mess with a good thing?

I’ve blogged about a number of “traditions” I’ve started for the girls, like strawberry cake on Valentine's Day , the girls’ 1/2 birthday celebrations, our annual trip to the pumpkin patch, and most recently, their birthday play-by-play.

Traditions…rituals…whatever you call them, I thought I’d divulge one more.

I take the girls’ picture before each of their well-baby visits. For a visit to the pediatrician, they’re always dressed in a special outfit, and I’ll have an exact weight and height to note on the picture. Oh, and I’m a Sucker (with a capital “S”) for comparison pictures!

The girls’ two-year checkup was on Friday.

Baby A measured 24 pounds and 34”. Baby B measured 25 pounds and 33.5”.

Look how much they’ve grown – and changed! – since just six months ago, at their 18-month checkup!

Baby A measured 21 pounds, 10 ounces and 32”. Baby B measured 23 pounds, 3 ounces and 31.5”.

I hope one day the girls will appreciate my dutiful note-taking and schedule-making…either that, or they’ll work together to find a 12-step program for their “ritualistic” mama.

Both of those pictures are too sweet! I agree....it is amazing how much they change from 18 months to 24 months! I thought the same with Molly and Luke. Wait until you compare the 2 to 3 pictures! Talk about craziness!

What a great way to keep track. I have always done monthly photos next to the same stuffed animal to monitor how they've grown. I stopped doing it each Month when they turned 18 months but now will do it yearly or on 1/2 birthdays if I remember :-)

Adam's huge compared to your two. I am not sure on the height...but he's already about 32 lbs!!! OMG! what a chunk! lol

I have just written a post on our 18-month check-up but scheduled to post tomorrow :)

B & A are adorable - I can't believe how they looked like babies at 18 months (well, compared to now) and now they're BIG girls!

I'm also working through all my emails so hang in there - I'll get to you :)

I think it's great that you have these special "ritualistic" things you do.
It makes for great memories to look back on.
You're girls are blessed to have you as their mother Mandy!

What a cute idea! I always feel that mine aren't growing at all, but I'll bet something like this would change my mind!

Love the idea of the well-visit photos! I try to get a shot at the actual appt, but it rarely turns out.

I love it! What a great tradition! I wish I'd thought to do this as well. It's probably a bit late for us to start now. It also might be tricky as I've been doing the doctor visits by myself the last few times. But perhaps someone in the waiting room would take our photo.

We're all about schedules and routines over here too, which is exactly how I ran my classroom too. My kids seem to like knowing how each day is going to go. I always tell people, Every day is much the same, but also very different. :o)

We are all about schedules here too (we've discussed this I think!)

But now I'm thinking that you are PURE GENIUS! Why didn't I think of the picture thing before the doctor's visit?!!! That's brilliant!

I'm off to read the other posts you linked so I can get some other cool ideas!
