A Bit ABout Me, September Edition

My birthday is February 23.  On the 23rd of each month, I share a couple of random things about myself...

I’m a reformed bagel lover.

I didn’t grow up eating bagels.  In fact, I don’t remember ever seeing a bagel in person in Deep South Alabama in my day.  Biscuits, now those were another story.

I did a summer study program “up north”, at Indiana University, before my senior year of college.  The café in the bottom of our dorm didn’t have biscuits, though.  Bagels were the primary option.  I remember choosing a plain one, opting not to have it sliced or toasted.  My mostly “northern” friends laughed as I bit into it like a sandwich and twisted my face at its doughy texture.

Over the course of the summer, I eventually developed quite a taste for bagels, and I was thrilled to come back to Alabama to find a new bagel shop just off campus.  Bagels continue to be one of my favorite morning treats…and I’d venture to say I now eat them like a “professional”.

My favorite song of all time is “No Rain” by Blind Melon.

I am not really a big Blind Melon fan.  There are many more artists whom I adore, from whom I own large collections of CDs.  I feel semi-silly about it, actually…it’s not that there’s some fantastical message from that song, but there’s something about it that just makes me jive.  That’s my story and I’m sticking to it.  No shame in “No Rain”.

I didn't have a bagel until I was nearly 18. Weren't we southern girls deprived? :)

Oy vey! You poor southern girls with your biscuits and grits and gravy! That's just too funny!

LOL you were deprived but I'm betting you made up for it :)

We had a lovely shop near my ex-company that made the BEST bagels ever. I can still imagine those bagels....

Recently I discovered my favourite bakery also makes bagels - and good ones too.

So on Sat we go past and get some and I have mine with the cottage cheese I'm addicted to - sundried tomato and basil. YUMMY!

I thought I was the only one who didn't have bagels growing up. I tired them for the first time in high school after I moved away from Texas.
