Dear Mr. Time Change Man,

I’ve never been a huge fan of changing all my clocks and watches...it’s enough to have to fix all the electronic devices in my house after a power outage…but to have to add wall clocks and watches to that twice a year always seems like quite a task.

But once upon a time, outside of that inconvenience, I could manage to deal with the Time Change. “Falling Back” was always my preference…getting another precious hour of sleep. And I was rewarded for “Springing Forward” with another hour of daylight after I got home from work, which was also nice.

However, in the two years since our girls were born, I have come to loathe both Great Disturbances to my schedule that otherwise runs like, well, clockwork.

I have thought for the past two years that you must certainly be a man*…a man who does not have small children…a man whose wife doesn’t live and die by the schedules of such small children.

Mr. Time-Change Man, surely you have never cut off a friend’s conversation, mid-sentence, because you needed to begin the naptime routine. You’ve never forgone dessert at dinner so you can get home for bedtime. You’ve never turned down social event after social event because they might interfere with the schedule you so painstakingly put in place.

And you must not know how critical a consistent bedtime is. I am a firm believer that that is what keeps our girls [mostly] good-natured…and I KNOW it is what keeps this mommy SANE!!!

Mr. Time-Change Man, I know you enjoy the power you have over our lives, but this season, I’m actually hoping to turn your little game to my advantage.

Since our girls dropped to one nap last fall, they’ve been going to bed earlier and earlier. I am going to try to keep them up a little bit longer, hoping that it might just prompt them to sleep a little bit later.

And if that comes to fruition, maybe we can be friends, after all…at least until this fall.

Sincerely,
The Schedule-Master

*My apologies for coming across as so sexist. That's not my normal outlook, by any stretch, but I'm taking some creative license with this post. :)

Ha! I love it! This Schedule-Master completely agrees with you! I think they should just adjust our time by 30 minutes, and NOT do all this back and forth business.

I dread dropping the second nap. I know it will most likely happen this spring/summer. Not looking forward to figuring out a new schedule when that happens!

I am proud to report that NOT ONCE have our girls' schedule been altered by the time change! They just go with the flow and I love it.

Wishing you an easy transition!

I would be SO with you but did you know our time never ever changes? It's wonderful........ however, thanks for telling me as I have international clients and I will check if we're still talking at the same time this week :)

I thought Mr. Time Change Man was going to be the guy who went around the day after the time change telling you what time it *really* was...guess we'll leave that to Husband!

I can't tell you how long it took me to realize why the Crazies weren't going to sleep last night!

Ugh. I totally feel your pain. Two days into the time change, and two days into schedule chaos in our house.

The time change has totally thrown Lboy off too! I was just nodding my head through this entire post. I have so many people in my family who don't think that I should be so strict with my schedule because Todd & I are consistently turning down outings with friends to make sure Lboy is in bed on time.

Thanks to Mr. Time Change Man-yeah Lboy didn't fall asleep last night until 10:00 because he was off his schedule when we put him in the crib that he just screamed his head off. I finally got him out & he just sat in my lap. I can thank Mr. Lightening & Thunder for scaring the kid awake too!

I think this is the first year DST hasn't totally upended our schedule. I actually had to wake my girls up for school this morning. I detest the time change, especially springing forward. Whoever approved DST clearly wasn't a parent!

See, I always look forward to this time of year because I'm hoping that it'll prompt my kids to sleep in on the weekends. A girl can dream, right?

so...has the time change helped like you hoped it would? Thankfully it hasn't thrown us off too much. Nowadays we're really flexible with our schedule. Jacob never naps, Sarah does sometimes, but rarely at home on the weekends. And thankfully it hasn't messed with Adam but that may be due to the fact that we were all sick all weekend and he was ready for sleep whenever. (He took a 3.5 hour nap Sunday...but woke with a 103+ fever. :-(

Weekends ARE sleeping in...but not as late as I wish. I normally am up at 5:15 during the week and usually get to sleep until 7:30 or 8:30 on the weekends. I'd love to shoot for 9 or 10...but that's not happening until they are teens! ha!

Too funny! So, how is it going?? We have been pretty lucky not to have had too many issues with any of the time changes (knock on wood!). Playing outside this weekend and still being a little tired from being sick ensured that A & M were ready to go to bed at an early hour, so it worked out okay.

Over the last six months or so, it has become more about "routine" than "schedule" for us, I think...as in, as long as we follow the regular routine pretty closely, the time can vary a bit in either direction and it doesn't cause too much chaos. We sure are enjoying the afternoon sunlight!!

So funny!

I always get nervous around DST changes, but the last two haven't been so bad for us. The kids may have been a little crankier on that first day with one less hour of sleep (I made sure they woke up at the new wake-up time), but otherwise, it's been completely fine. I'm hoping this is because they're getting older (all of 3!) and that the time changes will continue to be less of an issue from here on out.
